How It Works

Water is the most essential nutrient for livestock. Animals need clean, fresh water daily for digestion, temperature regulation, and milk production.

Factors Affecting Water Needs

  • Species: Larger animals need more water. Cattle and horses need 10-15 gallons/day.
  • Season: Summer increases water needs by 15% due to heat stress and evaporation.
  • Lactation: Milk-producing animals need 2× the base water amount.
  • Age/Size: Younger/smaller animals need less (this calculator uses adult averages).
  • Activity: Working animals (draft horses, herding dogs) need more water.

Water Source Considerations

  • Troughs/Tanks: Simple but prone to algae and evaporation. Clean weekly.
  • Automatic Waterers: Reduce evaporation loss by ~20%. Provide fresh water on demand.
  • Pumps: Ensure adequate pressure for automatic waterers (40-60 PSI).
  • Freeze Protection: Use heated waterers or tank heaters in winter climates.
Daily water per animal = Base rate × Season multiplier × Lactation multiplier Season multipliers: Summer: 1.15 (15% increase) Spring/Fall: 1.00 (base rate) Winter: 0.85 (15% decrease, except dairy which stays higher) Lactation multiplier: 2.0 (doubles for lactating dairy/beef) Total daily = Sum of (animal count × daily per animal) Recommended tank size = Daily total × 3 (3-day emergency supply)
